Delhi Youth Summit on Climate

Come Create History, By Writing the Future - DYSoC 2008 |
DYSoC 2008 was hosted at a time when neither the Master Plan of Delhi or any Government document talked clearly about climate change or considered it in any policy measure for mitigating or adapting to the adverse impacts of a warming planet on the survival and sustainability in a complex urban center like Delhi. The Indian media had only begun to take climate change as a news of grave concern and our policy makers were still debating what stand to take at the International negotiations.
The objective of the summit then--at a time when our source of information on the issue was the western media--was to generate awareness and inspire and empower the youth to be able to take action. DYSoC '08 concluded with a Delhi Youth Charter on Climate Change which was presented to Mr. J.K. Dadoo, the then Environment Secretary of the Govt. of NCT of Delhi, who welcomed the initiative of the youth for a clean, bright today and a more secure tomorrow. DYSoC '08 also paved the way for launching of the Youth Climate movement in the country.

Today, two years down the line, India has already taken the lead in launching its National Action Plan on Climate Change with eight very ambitious missions. Shortly after that, Delhi took the lead within the country to launch its State Action Plan on Climate Change, authored by the Chief Secretary Mr. Rakesh Mehta and with a plan of action for the next three years. The media today is much more sensitive and awareness levels are high. It is with this background that the Delhi Youth Summit on Climate 2010 is being hosted by Delhi Greens.
